What to Look for in an Enrichment Program

What to Look for in an Enrichment Program
With so many after-school options in San Jose, how do you choose?

We’ve spent years in early childhood education, and we’ve learned that not all programs are created equal. Here are five things we recommend parents look for:

1. Small group sizes Your child should be seen, not lost in the crowd. When groups are too large, kids blend into the background. The magic happens when there’s space for every voice to be heard. Look for programs with max 6–9 students per group, small enough for real connection, big enough for collaboration.

2. Hands-on, not screens-only If kids spend the whole hour staring at a tablet, it’s just more screen time. The best programs mix unplugged and digital learning. Building with real materials. Tinkering with physical objects. Testing ideas with their hands, not just their thumbs.

At Creative Sparks Lab, our sessions start with unplugged activities before any screens come out. Because creativity lives in the real world.

3. Real outcomes, not just “fun” Fun matters, but so does progress. Ask any program: “What will my child actually gain?” If they can’t tell you clearly, that’s a red flag. Look for outcomes you can see: confidence speaking in front of others. Persistence when something doesn’t work the first time. Excitement about sharing what they built.

4. Teachers who understand kids Subject expertise is great. But early childhood experience? That’s how you know they’ll meet your child where they are. A coding expert who doesn’t understand 6-year-olds will frustrate your child. A teacher who knows how kids think will inspire them. Our team includes educators with 200+ years of combined early childhood experience. They don’t just know robotics, they know children.

5. No homework Kids spend all day in school. Evenings should be for family, rest, and free play. Enrichment should feel like discovery, not more school. The learning should happen in the session, not carried home as another task on your list.

At Creative Sparks Lab, we check every box.
Small groups. Hands-on projects. Clear outcomes. Teachers who understand kids. And zero homework.
